Using auto detailing clay (also called clay bar) is an excellent way to remove surface contaminants from your car's paint, glass, or chrome, which washing alone might not be able to remove. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it:
1.Wash the Car:
Before using clay, thoroughly wash and dry your vehicle to remove any loose dirt or debris. This prevents scratching the surface during the clay proces
2.Prepare the Clay Bar:
Take a small piece of clay (you don’t need the entire bar) and knead it with your hands until it’s soft and can be flattened into a disc. This makes it easier to work with
3.Spray Lubricant on the Surface:
Use the detailing spray or lubricant that comes with the clay bar kit. Spray a generous amount on a small section of the vehicle (about 2’ x 2’). The lubricant helps the clay glide over the surface without scratching.
4.Glide the Clay Bar:
Lightly rub the clay bar over the lubricated area in straight lines (either horizontal or vertical). You don’t need to press hard—just let the clay slide. You'll feel resistance at first as the clay picks up contaminants. Once the surface is smooth, the resistance will decrease.
5.Check the Clay Bar:
Periodically check the clay bar for dirt and contaminants it has picked up. If it looks dirty, fold it and knead it to expose a clean surface. If the bar becomes too dirty to knead, discard it and use a new piece.
6.Wipe the Area:
After claying a section, wipe it off with a clean microfiber towel to remove any leftover lubricant or residue.
7.Repeat:
Work in small sections around the entire car, repeating the lubrication, claying, and wiping process.
8.Inspect the Surface:
After you’re done, run your hand over the surface. It should feel smooth, with no rough patches.
9.Seal the Paint (Optional but Recommended):
After using clay, the surface is free of contaminants, but it’s also bare and vulnerable. Apply a wax, sealant, or ceramic coating to protect the paint and enhance the shine.
By using detailing clay, you can help maintain your car’s finish and prepare it for waxing or polishing.
